HANOI COMMENCES CONSTRUCTION OF GIANG BIEN INLAND WATERWAY PORT, PROVIDING FURTHER IMPETUS FOR LOGISTICS INFRASTRUCTURE.

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the afternoon of October 9, 2026, Hanoi City held groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies for 18 exemplary projects to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2026). Among them, the Giang Bien Inland Waterway Port project is one of the projects being launched, contributing to the development of logistics infrastructure and strengthening connectivity in the Capital region.

Delegates pressed the button to officially launch key projects in various priority areas of Hanoi City.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Giang Bien Inland Waterway Port is part of a series of groundbreaking, inauguration, and implementation activities for key projects in Hanoi to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2026). This event marks a step forward in the development of logistics infrastructure, contributing to the completion of the transportation network, enhancing transport capacity, and strengthening inter-regional connectivity of the Capital.

The project is being implemented in the context of Hanoi's concrete implementation of its 100-year plan, focusing on boosting investment in transportation infrastructure, strengthening regional connectivity, and improving the capacity for goods circulation. The development of industrial zones, urban areas, and commercial activities is placing increasingly greater demands on the transportation network between the capital and Hai Phong , Quang Ninh, and other northern production centers.

In that context, Giang Bien Inland Waterway Port is envisioned to become a hub for cargo collection, loading, unloading, and transshipment on the Duong River, thereby opening up more options for businesses and alleviating pressure on the road transport system.

The project covers a total area of over 35 hectares, including 23.87 hectares of land and 11.23 hectares of water area for port operations. With a total investment of approximately VND 2,551.8 billion, the port has a berth length of about 600m and a designed capacity of 2 million tons of cargo per year. The port system is comprehensively developed, including berths, cargo yards, internal transportation, architectural structures, technical infrastructure, landscaping, and other facilities to support operations.

Located on the Quang Ninh – Hai Phong – Hanoi waterway route, connecting to the Red River system, Giang Bien Port has a favorable position in the northern waterway trade network, contributing to strengthening the connection of goods between the capital and Hai Phong, Quang Ninh and neighboring provinces.

This advantage is particularly suitable for transporting large volumes of goods in batches and over long distances. Once operational, the port is expected to help alleviate pressure on road transport, while promoting connectivity between waterways, roads, and railways, gradually developing a multimodal transport network in Hanoi.

The role of Giang Bien is defined in the Hanoi Capital City Planning for the period 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1569/QD-TTg dated December 12, 2024.

The Giang Bien Inland Waterway Port Project is being implemented by a consortium comprising Hateco Group Joint Stock Company, Hateco Logistics Joint Stock Company, and Inland Waterway Port Construction and Investment Joint Stock Company.

Accordingly, goods from industrial zones, factories, warehouses, and distribution centers in Hanoi and its surrounding areas can be collected by road to Giang Bien Port, then transferred to the river for transport to Hai Phong. Conversely, goods imported through seaports can travel by waterway to Giang Bien before being distributed to Hanoi and neighboring localities.

This model allows for leveraging the advantages of each mode of transport: road transport handles collection and distribution over suitable distances; waterway transport handles large volumes over long journeys; and sea transport handles inter-regional and international cargo flows. As a result, the supply chain has more options instead of relying solely on road transport along the entire Hanoi-Hai Phong route.

The Giang Bien Inland Waterway Port project, implemented by a consortium of Hateco Group Joint Stock Company, Hateco Logistics Joint Stock Company, and Inland Waterway Port Construction Investment Joint Stock Company, continues Hateco's investment and development strategy in port and logistics infrastructure that it has pursued in recent years.

In the field of port infrastructure, Hateco has invested in and put into operation the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Port (HHIT) in the Lach Huyen port area, Hai Phong; and continues to expand its investment activities with a container port project in Lien Chieu, Da Nang , and the Song Chanh Inland Waterway Port in Quang Ninh.

Hateco Hai Phong International Container Port (HHIT) at Lach Huyen Wharf is one of Hateco's port infrastructure projects.

While HHIT Port plays a key role as a maritime gateway in the North, Giang Bien Port aims to consolidate, consolidate, and distribute goods in the Hanoi area. These two locations, situated at different points in the supply chain, facilitate a more integrated flow of goods, from import/export gateways deep into the interior and vice versa.

Accordingly, goods passing through Lach Huyen now have the added option of continuing their journey by river to Hanoi before being distributed to industrial zones, production centers, and consumer markets. On the export side, goods from the capital and surrounding areas have an additional option for accessing the Hai Phong seaport. The addition of Giang Bien Port thus contributes to expanding the service chain from seaports to inland waterways, warehousing, transportation, and goods distribution.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony, the port facilities, cargo yards, and technical infrastructure will be implemented according to plan, aiming to form a waterway transport hub connected to the regional transport network. In the long term, the operational efficiency of Giang Bien Port will depend on the synchronization between the port and road networks, warehouses, inland ports, industrial zones, and nearby logistics hubs.

The Giang Bien inland waterway port is a link in the process of completing this structure. The commencement of the project is not simply about adding another port on the Duong River, but about creating conditions for the formation of a goods transport route between Hanoi, the northern provinces, and the Hai Phong seaport gateway, thereby enhancing logistics capacity and expanding the development space in the Northeast of the capital.
