DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN HOA BINH INSPECTS AND GUIDES DEVELOPMENT OF HATECO HAIPHONG INTERNATIONAL CONTAINER TERMINAL

During his working program in Hai Phong City, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh led a Government delegation, accompanied by leaders of central ministries, agencies, and Hai Phong City officials, to conduct a working session at the Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT). Receiving the delegation were Mr. Tran Van Ky – Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hateco Group, along with the Group's executive leadership and the management board of HHIT.

At the working session, Mr. Nguyen Van Tien – General Director of Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal presented a comprehensive overview of production and business operations following the port's recent commencement of operations.

According to the report, HHIT is the first "green and smart" port in Vietnam invested with a synchronous infrastructure system, featuring automated gates and semi-automated quay cranes capable of accommodating the world's largest container vessels. The terminal operates direct maritime routes to the US West and East Coasts, Europe, and India. The port applies a suite of advanced technologies such as NAVIS N4, IFS, TAS, OCR, RFID, and 5G networks, alongside modern equipment including STS and eRTG cranes. The comprehensive application of technology and digitization has optimized management, enhanced operational productivity, shortened vessel waiting times, reduced vehicle turnaround times, and notably reduced CO₂ emissions, contributing to environmental protection.

Currently, the port maintains an average of 5–6 vessel calls per week, with throughput in many months exceeding the Phase 1 design capacity. HHIT is the first seaport in Vietnam to deploy OCR (Optical Character Recognition) systems on STS cranes, allowing for the automatic recording of container status and numbers throughout the handling process, ensuring data safety and accuracy. Consequently, handling productivity has surged significantly: from 18 containers/hour/crane at initial operation to a current average of 30 containers/hour/crane, peaking at 42 containers/hour/crane, contributing to faster vessel clearance and operational efficiency.

HHIT is also the first port in Vietnam to deploy a fully automated gate system, integrating gate OCR and TAS truck appointment software. Following four months of trial operations, the port officially operated 100% automated gates from June 16, 2025. As a result, truck turnaround time at the port has been reduced to under 18 minutes, helping to alleviate congestion and improve cargo clearance capacity.

Since June 2025, the entire yard area of zones A, B, and C, covering 52.9 hectares, has been put into operation, significantly increasing container storage capacity. Equipment systems in the yard utilize eco-friendly, high-productivity technology, helping to shorten vessel berth times and vehicle entry/exit times. By November 2025, yard utilization capacity reached approximately 40% of design capacity.

Throughput via the port reached 498,000 containers, equivalent to 800,000 TEUs (from February 2025 to November 2025), accounting for approximately 40% of the container market share among ports in the Lach Huyen area (Hai Phong). Currently, HHIT provides services to nearly 10 of the world's Top 10 shipping lines, with weekly vessel schedules—an impressive result for a port that has been in operation for less than 10 months.

At the meeting, HHIT leadership also petitioned the Government to consider developing a turning basin and a two-way navigation channel to enhance the capacity to receive large container vessels of up to 200,000 DWT in the Lach Huyen area.

In his concluding remarks, Standing Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh acknowledged and highly appreciated Hateco as an investment entity with high technological content. The construction and operation of a green, smart port on the largest scale in Vietnam have contributed to realizing the policy of socializing infrastructure investment and promoting marine economic development in line with the Government's orientation. The Deputy Prime Minister encouraged Hateco to continue leveraging its advantages and expanding its investment scale towards other maritime areas, not stopping only at Lach Huyen; he simultaneously affirmed that the Government will always accompany and create the most favorable conditions for the Group to continue making breakthroughs in strategic infrastructure projects.
